Alfa 4C gets new fluid metal colour for Frankfurt 2011

Alfa 4C gets new fluid metal colour for Frankfurt 2011

Alfa Romeo will be exhibiting the Geneva 2011 show’s Alfa 4C Concept at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, updated with a new ‘fluid metal’ colour. Just as a recap, the 4C is a two seater rear wheel drive coupe with a mid-mounted engine, approximately 4 meters long and with a short wheelbase of less than 2.4 meters.
Think of it as a scaled down version of the 8C Competizione, featuring construction made out of carbon and lightweight aluminum and powered by Alfa Romeo’s 1750 direct injection turbo engine, mated to an Alfa TCT dual dry clutch transmission.
Look after the jump for a small teaser gallery of the fluid metal 4C.

Peugeot HX1 Concept MPV to debut at Frankfurt 2011

Peugeot HX1 Concept MPV to debut at Frankfurt 2011

Peugeot’s latest concept car set for a debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show is an MPV concept called the Peugeot HX1 Concept Car, but it’s not your usual soccer mom van – it’s low slung like a JDM Honda Odyssey.
The HX1 Concept measures 1,373mm tall, 1,990mm wide and 4,954mm long, as a comparison, the Peugeot 5008 is 1,638mm tall, 2,118mm wide and 4,530mm long.
At first glance, it looks as though the HX1 only has two rows of seats, with a maximum seating capacity of four. That’s because by default, the rear row is configured for maximum comfort or leg room.
If required, a “center row” can be created in between the front and rear rows thanks to the “pull-out seats” integrated into the back of the front seats.
The HX1 Concept also featured variable bodywork to optimize the car for aerodynamics at different speeds. A spoiler and two side skirts located at the top of the tailgate are deployed above 100km/h.
Power is provided by Peugeot’s HYbrid4 system, which uses a 204 horsepower 2.2 liter HDi diesel engine coupled with a 95 horsepower electric motor, resulting in a peak output of 299 horsepower. The system uses a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The car also has plug in 240V charging capabilities and an electric only mode, which provides a range of 30km.
Look after the jump for pix of the Peugeot HX1 Concept.

New MINI Coupe – production car details revealed!

New MINI Coupe – production car details revealed!

And here’s the 5th member of the MINI family – the production version of the new MINI Coupe. It’s the brand’s first model to adopt a three box body style – the rest have all been different kinds of hatchbacks.
The two-seater measures 3,734 mm (MINI Cooper Coupé: 3,728 mm) in length, 1,683 mm in width and 1,384 mm (MINI Cooper Coupé: 1,378 mm) in height. Its exterior length, width and wheelbase (2,467 mm) match the typical measurements of a MINI, but the MINI Coupé has a significantly lower body height.
A few engine options are available – from a 122 horsepower 160Nm Cooper Coupe to a 184 horsepower 240Nm Cooper S Coupe, up to a 211 horsepower 260Nm MINI JCW Coupe. If you want an oil burner, the Cooper SD Coupe makes 143 horsepower and 305Nm. All models use an Electric Power Steering.
Two different transmissions are available – 6-speed auto or manual. The Cooper S Coupe and Cooper SD Coupe come with a new self-adjusting clutch. Automatic readjustment of the clutch ensures that the pedal feel remains consistent through the life of the clutch.
From the photos and press material, it looks like MINI has taken everything you know about MINIs and put it into a new 2 seater body. Look after the jump for a full gallery and a few videos on the new MINI Coupe.

Diesels and Hybrids, how are they faring in Malaysia?

Diesels and Hybrids, how are they faring in Malaysia?

Diesel powered passenger vehicles outside of the pick-up truck segment have mushroomed in recent times, thanks to players such as BMW and Ford, while some like Hyundai, Chevrolet and Land Rover have brought in torquey oil burner SUVs. This is in addition to truck based SUVs that traditionally use diesel engines such as the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Toyota Fortuner.
As for hybrids, they’re now a regular fixture in urban areas. The government’s tax exemption for hybrids below 2.0 litres has benefited Honda with the Insight and Toyota with its Prius; the former is the cheapest and most popular hybrid in the country now. Even premium brand Lexus has joined in with the fun with the CT 200h, RX 450h and the LS 600hL, although the latter two do not qualify for tax breaks.
Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) figures show that Honda sold 745 units of the Insight in July, and 3080 units so far this year, far higher than the costlier, but higher tech Prius, which did 158 units in July and 1085 units year to date.
By the way, Honda Malaysia sold more Insights than Civic 1.8s from Jan-July; the RM99,800 hybrid also highlights the ambitious price of the Jazz, making the supermini, which costs an extra RM10k, look very poor value.
Some considering the RM140k Prius may have decided to cough out RM30k more for a Lexus badge and the associated luxury. Launched in late February, the RM168,000 CT 200hhas found 141 new homes so far. Interestingly, the RM196,500 Luxury spec is the more popular of the two CTs with 171 sales this year.
The hybrid RX and LS haven’t caught on though – only one unit of each has been registered, likely the ones on display at Lexus Mutiara Damansara.
Combing through the figures, it’s obvious that BMW is the diesel champ, which comes as no surprise since the company is the most vocal and active proponent of modern diesel tech in the country. It’s paying off – ‘Advanced Diesel’ vehicles now account for more than 25% of vehicles delivered by BMW Group Malaysia.
In fact, the F10 520d became the second top seller in BMW’s stable for July – with 62 units sold, it’s second only to the 523i’s 74 units.
However, many still fear the infamous “poor Malaysian fuel quality” issue, which according to diesel drivers Paul and Harvinder, are unfounded. Some are put off by the cleanliness (or rather lack of) at the diesel pumps, while others don’t like the clatter, which by the way, is near inaudible in the 520d’s cabin.
Another brand racking up big diesel numbers is Hyundai. The Santa Fe SUV and Grand Starex MPV both come with modern commonrail turbodiesels; the former with Hyundai’s latest ‘R engine’ with 197 PS and 442 Nm of torque, which is a lot of grunt for the capacity.
No surprise then, that 306 buyers chose the CRDi variant (Jan-Jul) compared to 182 for the 2.4 Theta II petrol. The 2.5L Starex (526 units YTD) remains popular thanks to its huge body and unrivaled seating capacity.
So while the seeds of hybrid and diesel sown in Malaysia are beginning to see fruit, there’s still a long way to go before these alternatives become mainstream. The hybrid cause is gaining momentum, but it remains to be seen if it can be sustained when government incentives are lifted.

Another version of the new Toyota Camry – is this ours?

Another version of the new Toyota Camry – is this ours?

Two days ago, we posted on the new seventh-generation Toyota Camry that made its debut in USA. However, we all know that there are various versions of Toyota’s popular D-segment sedan, and what we may be getting is likely to different from the North American car.
Now, here are some official shots of another version of the new Camry, released by Toyota Ukraine. We can see that the front and rear design of this car is totally different from the US version. This set of pics reveal a Camry with a “baby Lexus LS” front end, which features a grille with more slats and more chrome, which is what buyers from our region (plus China and Russia) generally prefer.
And while the side profile is similar to what we’ve seen from the US, the rear end is once again completely different. While the US car has those distinctive “boomerang” lamp clusters, this one is more “full” in shape, and both sides are connected with a fat chrome strip. Even the rims look familiar.
Inside, there’s lots of wood with glossy finish and metallic accents. They go on to a dark grey cabin, and the overall look is quite classy in a traditional way. We have a feeling that this Camry we see here will be the one ASEAN is getting.
A quick look at the teased brochure/price list reveals two variants for the Ukrainian market – a 2.5 liter inline-4 making 180 PS and a 3.5 liter V6 making 277 PS, both with 6-speed automatic transmission. Hope this means our Camry will also get a 2.5 liter with 6-speed AT to replace the current 2.4 liter with 5-speed AT.

All-new Mercedes-Benz B-Class officially revealed!

All-new Mercedes-Benz B-Class officially revealed!

After a leak earlier in the week, which we carried here, Mercedes-Benz has decided to reveal everything about their all new B-Class ahead of its world debut at Frankfurt next month. To sum it up, Stuttgart says that their new ‘Compact Sports Tourer’ is ‘substantially more agile and efficient, but as comfortable and spacious as ever’.
As expected, the new B-Class has a substantially bigger footprint that the car it replaces. At 4,359 mm long and 1,786 mm wide, it’s 89 mm longer and 9 mm wider, although the new car sits 46 mm lower than before. Accordingly, the seat height in relation to the road has also been reduced by 86 mm, for easier vehicle entry, says Merc. They add that in response to customer requests, the sitting position is now more upright.
For those at the back, which is important for this model, a lowering of the vehicle’s floor at the rear produces segment-leading rear legroom (976 mm) that even surpasses that of the E and S-Class! And despite the lower roofline, headroom has been further improved over the old car.
Additionally, there’s an Easy-Vario-Plus system that includes fore/aft adjustment of the rear seats by up to 140 mm (increasing boot volume from 488 to 666 litres) and a front passenger seat which backrest can be folded forward onto the seat cushion.
Now, the B’s new looks might not be agreeable to all, it’s hard to argue with its slippery drag coefficient of 0.26. This is helped by areas such as air flow around the front wheels, underbody design and the cooling air flow. Patents are pending for details such as the serrated wheel arch spoiler. An upcoming optional Eco Technology package will bring the Cd figure down to 0.24, which is on par with the E-Class Coupé and impressive for a hatchback shape.
The new M270 engines feature Merc’s third-generation direct injection system that first surfaced in last year’s BlueDirect V6 and V8 engines. Both are 1.6-litre turbocharged units with max torque available from 1,250 rpm. The one in the B 180 is rated at 122 hp and 200 Nm, while the B 200 has 156 hp and 250 Nm.
The diesels are based on the OM651 family used from the C to the S-Class, but with displacement scaled down to 1.8 litres and mounted transversely for the first time. The B 180 CDI generates 109 hp and 250 Nm from 1,400 rpm, while the B 200 CDI packs in 136 hp and 300 Nm from 1,600 rpm. All engines can be paired to a new 7G-DCT dual clutch transmission or a new six-speed manual, which Merc says is closely related to the DCT.
Mercedes promises improved agility, thanks to the new B’s lowered centre of gravity, a new four-link rear axle and the upgraded ESP. A sports suspension is optionally available. This one further lowers the ride height by 20 mm and features sports dampers with amplitude-selective damping and Direct-Steer (faster, sharper response) for the electromechanical steering.
The new B is build with a modular ‘Energy Space’ concept that’s designed to accommodate versions with an alternative drive. There are interfaces in the body shell that enables the floor panel to be easily modified, plus an underfloor compartment covering part of the area under the rear bench seat for ‘alternative energy accumulators’. So it looks like we can expect some sort of hybrid B-Class in the future, too.

Seventh-gen Porsche 911 revealed!

Frankfurt preview: Seventh-gen Porsche 911 revealed!

Yes, believe it, this is the new seventh-generation Porsche 911 Carrera. Despite the same same looks, Porsche is calling this ’991′ model ‘completely redesigned’. Try mocking their lazy designers and you’ll get this for an answer: ‘evolution, not revolution’.
At 2,450 mm, the new 911′s wheelbase has been stretched by 100 mm. Zuffenhausen did not reveal the dimensions, but Autocar UK quotes insiders saying that it’s 56 mm longer, 65 mm wider and 11 mm lower than the 997. Compared to that car, the 991 body, with its aluminum-steel composite construction, is 45 kg lighter. The combo of a bigger footprint, lower height and reduced weight sounds good.
It might take an avid 911 fan to spot, but the 991′s side mirrors are now mounted on the upper edge of the door. Porsche says that this helps highlight the new design line and gives the visual impression of width. The iconic silhouette of the 48-year old model is unchanged, but there’s a wider, variably extending rear spoiler at the back, which features slim tail lamps that should be the 991′s most distinct signature.
The spoiler, combined with greater structural rigidity and optimised aerodynamics, means that the 991′s front and rear lift has been reduced to near zero while retaining the Cd value of 0.29.
The new Carrera and Carrera S boast better performance and efficiency. The latter is aided by automatic start stop, engine and transmission thermal management, electrical system recuperation, the world’s first seven-speed manual gearbox and the ability to ‘sail’ or coast with the PDK transmission. There’s also a new electro-mechanical power steering in place of the hydraulic setup.
The 911 Carrera is powered by a new 350 hp/380 Nm, 3.4-litre boxer engine, down in size from the current 3.6L. Paired to PDK, it consumes just 8.2 l/100 km, 1.6 l/100 km less than its predecessor. That, plus a century sprint time of just 4.4 seconds (4.2 seconds with Sport Chrono Package’s Launch Control) means it can be all the 911 you need.
If not, there’s the Carrera S with its 400 hp/440 Nm, 3.8-litre boxer – 15 horses more than before. The S achieves 8.7 l/100 km, 14% better than the outgoing car. 0-100 km/h is done in 4.1 seconds, or 3.9 with Launch Control. The S also features for the first time, Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) active roll stabilisation.
Inside, it’s still very much a 911, but with a touch more flair than before. Inspired by the Carrera GT are the rising center console and high-mounted shift lever. Classic Porsche elements include the five round gauges – one of them a high res multifunction screen – the central tachometer and the ignition lock to the left of the steering wheel.
As usual, Carrera and Carrera S models start the ball rolling, followed by Cabriolet and 4S variants (2012) and the range topping Turbo (2013). More pics after the jump.

Ferrari 458 Spider (HD)

Ferrari 458 Spider

Frankfurt preview: Ferrari 458 Spider

Ferrari will be debuting the world’s first mid-rear engined berlinetta equipped with a retractable hard top at the Frankfurt show next month – the 458 Spider is set to join the 458 Italia in the company’s lineup.
Power comes courtesy of a naturally-aspirated, direct-injection 4.5 litre V8 offering 570 cheval vapeur (CV) – which works out to 562 hp – at 9,000 rpm and 540 Nm at 6,000 rpm. This is mated to a dual-clutch F1 paddle-shift seven-speed transmission with E-Diff, which integrates F1-Trac traction control and high-performance ABS.
The hard-top is made entirely of aluminium – the company says this offers a number of advantages over the traditional folding soft-top, including a reduction of 25 kg in weight and a deployment time of just 14 seconds. Fully integrated into the styling of the car, the hard-top fits neatly ahead of the engine bay without compromising aerodynamics or performance, or even space – there’s still a generous rear bench for luggage behind the seats.
Styling-wise, the rear of the car – which sits on 20-inch wheels and 235/35 front and 295/35 rear rubbers – is characterised by buttresses designed to optimise the flow of air to the engine intakes as well as the clutch and gearbox oil radiators.

Ford and Toyota

Ford and Toyota to collaborate on new hybrid system for SUVs and pick-ups, as well as telematics standards

Ford and Toyota will be working together as equal partners to develop a new, advanced hybrid system for pick-ups and SUVs in North America. The system is expected to be ready for the market later this decade, and will equip Toyota and Ford rear-wheel drive models.
The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding, with a formal agreement expected to be in place by next year. Under the MOU, the two companies will specifically jointly develop the new rear-wheel drive hybrid system and its component technology, as well as independently and separately integrate the new hybrid system in their future vehicles.
Both companies have been working independently on their own future-generation rear-wheel drive hybrid systems, and are now committed to working together, stating that they can deliver these hybrid technologies to customers sooner and more affordably than if they worked alone.
Ford and Toyota also agreed to work together in developing each company’s telematics standards, helping to makes more internet-based services and information available to customers around the world. Each company will, however, continue to develop its own in-vehicle products and features. Currently, Ford has items such as SYNC and MyFordTouch in place, while Toyota has the likes of G-BOOK and G-Link.

7th-gen US market 2012 Toyota Camry finally revealed

7th-gen US market 2012 Toyota Camry finally revealed

We’ve had glimpses of it already, but here are the official details and images of the 2012 Toyota Camry, which has been finally launched. The seventh-generation Camry makes its debut in America, where it has been best-selling car for nine years running and 13 of the past 14 years. The main selling points are the “bold, sophisticated new design”, more spacious interior, improved driving dynamics and an even quieter ride.
“The all-new 2012 Camry blends an evolution of the car’s values – such as comfort, efficiency, reliability and safety – with a more appealing design and engaging driving experience. Competition in the midsize sedan segment is the strongest it’s ever been, and the all-new Camry is designed to maintain its long-standing leadership while also broadening its appeal,” explained Bob Carter, Toyota Division group VP and GM.
Toyota says that the new Camry’s form is elegantly simple but modern, emphasising a wider, lower stance over the previous model. We can see the more crisp and precise character line, while things like the more strongly curved door cross-section and better defined rocker panel molding give it a more expressive look. The new headlamps and wrap around “arrow” tail lamps also help the more dynamic cause.
There are again three powertrain choices, all of which have been improved for better economy and performance. The revised 2.5-litre four-cylinder now boast 178 hp, an increase of 9 hp, and 230 Nm of torque. This engine employs Dual VVT-i for both intake and exhaust camshafts, as well as Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS) that helps optimise torque over a broad engine speed range. The 3.5 V6 has 268 hp and 336 Nm.
Both petrol engines come exclusively with a six-speed automatic gearbox with manual shift mode. In the Camry SE, “D range” sequential shifting allows manual shifting with the new steering paddle shifters even in D mode. The SE’s automatic transmission also features faster shift times in S mode, with downshift blipping control to boot.
The new Camry Hybrid debuts a highly revised version of the brand’s Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain, including a new 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine. With US EPA-estimated 14.5 km/l combined, it yields a more-than 30% boost in fuel economy compared to the previous gen car, thanks largely to the new powertrain, but also due to lighter weight and optimised aerodynamics.
Like the old 2.4, the new engine is the HSD uses the Atkinson cycle. Combined with the electric motor, the system produces a combined 200 hp. A new water-cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system cools and controls exhaust gas injected into each cylinder, eliminating the need to richen the air-fuel mixture to control cylinder temperatures.
The Camry Hybrid now has a more pleasing sound under acceleration, according to Toyota. Speaking of that 0-60 mph (96 km/h) is done in 7.6 seconds, so it’s not a slow car by any means.
While the old car’s external dimensions are largely retained, the 2012 Camry offers a more spacious interior. A new dashboard design, modified seat locations, redesigned seats and “lean” door, pillar and headliner trim all combine to add “both real space and greater perceptual spaciousness” while also enhancing outward visibility.
The accelerator pedal and front seats were moved forward, and the rear-seat hip point was positioned rearward, increasing the couple distance by 0.6-inch. Together with reshaped front seatbacks, rear-knee room is up by 1.8-inch. The redesigned center console and front edge of the rear-seat cushion increase rear middle seat legroom by two inches.
The Camry is known for its comfort and hushed ride, and a lot of work has gone into this new model to reset the benchmark. Measures that focus on reducing wind noise include stronger door and rocker area seals; optimised placement of sound insulating materials; foam applied in the roof, pillars and door openings; acoustic glass used for the V6 and Hybrid model’s windshield; and special bracing of cowl intake louvers.
The dashboard structure and assembly was also thoroughly reworked to prevent noise intrusion. The structure employs a new cross member and center brace, along with sandwiched sheet steel to suppress resonance and vibration. With the sandwiched steel, asphalt foam is used to absorb vibration energy while increasing sound blocking effectiveness.
Damping-coating thickness and application areas have been optimised for reduced floor-panel vibration and noise penetration through the floor, and there’s a new type of carpet, too.
An inch here and a decibel there may not sound too exciting, but it looks like Toyota knows its market well with the Camry, and has improved on its best seller’s strengths, while offering more contemporary design in and out. However, this is just the US version – our ASEAN car may not be identical. But do you like what you see?
Hi res gallery after the jump.

Mazda axes the rotary RX-8 due to low sales and emissions

Mazda axes the rotary RX-8 due to low sales and emissions

Mazda, the Zoom-Zoom brand famous for its rotary engined sports cars, has decided stop making the RX-8, the only rotary powered model in its current range.
Factors linked to the death of the RX-8 are falling sales and stringent global emissions standards, which are only going to get tougher. Production has already stopped in early July, and global sales will end later this year.
This comes after the Hiroshima based carmaker pulled out the RX-8 from Europe last year, as the high-revving 1.3-litre, twin-rotor rotary engined car failed to meet EU emissions standards. Without European volume, Mazda couldn’t justify selling the four-seat RX-8, a Mazda source was quoted as saying.
Sales has been diving – Mazda sold just 1,134 RX-8s last year, 49% less than in 2009. July 2011 year-to-date fugures dived a further 21%. The Japanese Yen’s rise vs the USD doesn’t help matters.
However, the RX-8′s demise may not be the death of the rotary engine. Sources say that Mazda engineers are still working on the next generation 1.6-litre rotary engine, code-named 16X. It will have lower emissions, better fuel economy, more power, and for the first time – direct-injection.
“The rotary is alive and well within Mazda. We are studying what’s the best way to come back to the market with the rotary,” said Jim O’Sullivan, CEO of Mazda North America.
However, with Mazda’s full focus now on its SkyActiv range of efficient tech, it remains to be seen when, if at all, rotary will be back. Farewell for now, and have a smooth spinning journey!

Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG revealed – NA V8 with 415 hp

Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG revealed – NA V8 with 415 hp

UPDATE: Hi res gallery of beauty and actions shots added
Mercedes-Benz has revealed its most powerful SLK to date, the latest SLK55 AMG, ahead of its Frankfurt world debut. As the range topping performance flagship of the third-generation SLK that was launched in June, the SLK55 AMG gets a new AMG 5.5-litre V8 engine with 415 hp and 540 Nm of torque, good for a 0-100 km/h dash in 4.6 seconds. Top speed is, as usual, restricted to 250 km/h.
No downsized twin-turbo V6 here, the SLK55 gets a naturally aspirated V8 with a “typical exhaust growl which only a large-displacement eight-cylinder engine can produce,” says Merc. This new M152 unit is based on the AMG M157 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine that debut last year, and seeing service in the AMG versions of the E, CLS, S and CL.
Identical design features include the displacement, bore/stroke, distance between cylinders, ECO stop/start system and direct injection technology. Things unique to the M152 are the new intake air ducting, new cylinder heads, the modified valve drive, an adapted oil supply system and an optimised crankcase.
AMG boasts that no other petrol engine features direct injection at 2,900 psi pressure, spray-guided combustion and piezo injectors, all in conjunction with map-controlled cylinder shut-off, an all-aluminum crankcase with “spectacle” honing, four-valve technology with continuous camshaft adjustment, a high compression ratio of 12.6:1, stop/start and generator management – while revving to a maximum speed of over 7,000 rpm.
Did you notice ‘cylinder shut off’ from the list? That’s a new feature developed completely by Mercedes-AMG where cylinders two, three, five and eight are cut off under partial load, which lowers fuel consumption considerably.
Available over a wide range from 800 to 3,600 rpm if the driver has selected transmission mode C (for Controlled Efficiency), there’s still 230 Nm available in four-pot mode (enough for regular driving), and the reactivation process at 3,600 rpm takes no more than 30 milliseconds. By the way, this tech is also used in the 750 hp V8 engines in Formula 1.
Another new tech is the AMG sports exhaust system featuring a flap on each side. This resolves the trade off between an emotional exhaust note during spirited driving and a more discreet engine sound in the partial load range.
At engine speeds below 2,000 rpm the flaps remain closed. When the driver accelerates, the flaps open at an angle of 15, then 30 and up to 50 degrees. Under full load, the flaps are fully opened so one can hear the full AMG rumble.
Power is transferred to the rear wheels by the AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic auto ‘box with three transmission modes: Controlled Efficiency (C), Sport (S) and Manual (M). The automatic rev-matching function when downshifting shortens shift times, while a double turbine torsional damper with centrifugal pendulum adapts to engine speed and helps minimise vibrations in four-cylinder mode.
To improve handling, the SLK55 comes with AMG sports suspension with Torque Vectoring Brakes and AMG Direct-Steer system, the latter with a parameter function adapted to match the suspension.
There’s also an AMG-exclusive 3-stage ESP that gives individual control choices at the touch of a button: “ESP ON”, “SPORT Handling Mode” and “ESP OFF” for the very brave or very good.
After all the meat, here’s the garnish. The SLK55 is set apart by AMG light-alloy wheels, exclusive AMG body styling with AMG spoiler lip and two chrome-plated twin tailpipes at the rear.
Inside, the highlights are the AMG-specific analog clock featuring an IWC design, the AMG Performance steering wheel, with its flattened top and bottom sections (also has aluminum shift paddles), and the AMG instrument cluster plus main menu.

2012 Audi A5 facelift range gets various technical updates

2012 Audi A5 facelift range gets various technical updates

In the never-ending quest to satisfy the needs of both consumer and policymaker demands for fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, Audi has revised their engine line-up for the 2012 model year, with the changes reflected with the latest model to be updated – the facelifted Audi A5 range. We’ve already covered some of these changes on the surface in our earlier story – here we go into a little more detail.
1.8L TFSI upgraded to 170 PS to replace 180 PS 2.0L
The baseline 1.8 liter TFSI inline-4 engine has been given a complete redesign, and these changes should later be implemented in the other four cylinder engine sizes, such as the fun 2.0 liter TFSI used in various VAG cars. Power is now up from 160 PS to 170 PS, and this engine now replaces the 180 PS tune of the 2.0 liter TFSI engine.
Something new with the engine is an upgraded fuel delivery system which now features a higher rail pressure (200 bar up from 150 bar) and both FSI direct injection as well as conventional indirect injection. Some carmakers have dabbled with this idea in the past, such as the Toyota/Lexus D-4S system, which also features both injector types.
Under part-load conditions, the system injects fuel at the end of the intake manifold, where it is mixed with air. This is said to help reduce both fuel consumption and particulate emissions, and plays a part in helping the engine meet Euro 6 emissions standards.
Normally aspirated 3.2L V6 replaced with supercharged 3.0L
The normally aspirated 3.2 liter V6 engine has been replaced with a lower output version of the supercharged 3.0 liter V6 TFSI engine, producing 272 PS instead of the original 333 PS tune it was unveiled with.
Normally aspirated 4.2L V8 replaced with supercharged 3.0L
The screaming 4.2 liter V8 in the S5 Coupe has been replaced with the higher output version of the 3.0 liter supercharged V6 engine, making 333 PS. This is an expected mode, considering the different body styles of the S5 like the drop top version have already had the V8 replaced with the blown V6, so now it’s finally the Coupe’s turn to get the more efficient engine.
A more advanced Quattro system
The 2012 model year A5 gets a more advanced quattro all wheel drive system using a crown gear center differential, which first made its debut on the RS5. It also has torque vectoring for more effective torque distribution.
New efficiency mode for Audi drive select
A new mode called ‘efficiency’ has been added to the current range of ‘dynamic’, ‘auto’, and ‘comfort’ modes in Audi drive select. In this mode, various variable systems like the power steering, throttle response, transmission shift point and even the air conditioning system will be adjusted for minimal power consumption.

For the first time the Lotus Evora GTE Road Car Concept has introduced  to the world within the Lotusexhibit at the McCall’s Motorworks Revival event Wednesday night, August 17, at the Monterey Jet Center.
The Lotus Evora GTE is a race car developed with a single-minded aim to be successful in the new global motorsport GTE category, which includes the world famous Le Mans 24 Hours.
To celebrate this Lotus Evora GTE, Lotus has built the race-inspired Lotus Evora GTE Road Car Concept. This high-strung Lotus Evora elicits over 420 bhp from its race-developed engine, fed through a sequential AMT racing gearbox and put to the pavement through ultra-lightweight forged alloy wheels with center-lock hubs shod with Pirelli P-Zero Corsa tires.
The Lotus Evora GTE Road Car Concept isn’t only a paint scheme or homage to a race car – this is a real race car that makes for a very serious road car.
The Lotus Evora GTE Road Car Concept will later be shown within the Lotus exhibit on Peter Hay Hill near The Lodge at Pebble Beach Thursday, August 18 through mid-day Saturday, August 20 before being moved onto the Concept Car Lawn for display throughout the remainder of the Concours weekend.
